Iona Station was founded in 1872 as a Canada Southern Railway stop and named for the Scottish island of Iona. The Dutton-Dunwich village grew up around the railway station and a small commercial main street, and the surrounding Southwold Earthworks National Historic Site preserves the rare double-walled Neutral Confederacy fortification — one of the best-preserved Indigenous earthworks in Ontario.
